Lights
The lights provided with each automobile or any motor vehicle, both outside and inside it, can be critical to safe driving and the well-being of its driver and passengers. A vehicle has several lights and sometimes all of them can be on at the same time. This is likely during night driving and during heavy fog or rain.

The basic function of lighting in automobiles, as with anything else, is illumination for safety and convenience. With cars, this is provided by the headlamps, turn signal lamps, brake lights and taillights. Lights inside the car, on the other hand, are used to make the gauges more easily readable and, of course, for the occupants to be able to read or see the interiors when needed.

Headlamps (also called “headlights”) have evolved much in their design and manufacture. The first “dipping” forward headlights (lamps that could direct their beam lower toward the ground rather than straight ahead, to reduce glare for the opposite driver) were introduced in 1915, but they required the driver to get out and make the adjustment mechanically. Two years later, designs were introduced that employed a lever right within the car that enabled the driver to change the beam to either high or low without getting out. In 1924, the first headlamp that used a single bulb to emit both high and low beams was introduced, and in 1927 the foot-operated dimmer switch came into use and became standard up to 1991.
Brake Light
Fog lamps became popular beginning in 1938 and halogen lamps came into widespread use in Europe beginning in 1962. The U.S. prohibited their use, preferring instead sealed beams with non-halogen bulbs inside. The U.S. manufacturers later converted in 1978 to using halogen bulbs inside sealed beams. Seeing that halogen lamps truly produced more light at the same power consumption, in 1983 they also adopted replaceable-bulb halogen technology.

Recent developments in this area include the following:
- high-intensity discharge (HID) systems introduced by BMW;
- complex-reflector technology;
- Directional headlamps that follow the direction of the front wheels to improve illumination during cornering and also in response to load conditions that alter aim angle;
- advanced front-lighting system (AFS), which controls headlamp behaviour in response not only to steering and suspension dynamics but also to ambient weather, visibility and terrain conditions; and e) delay headlights, which keep the light on for about 30 seconds after you have switched the ignition off, which would be great for finding your way into your home entrance, or in a dark and strange parking lot.
